The new digital solution gave Barnekreftforeningen a clearer and more accessible platform for reaching families, supporters and donors. With better structure, more user-friendly navigation and clearer paths to information, support and donation, users find what they need more quickly. At the same time, the solution makes it easier for the organisation to share stories, convey knowledge and mobilise support — strengthening both visibility, engagement and the ability to raise funds for work on behalf of children with cancer.

Good relationship journeys drive conversions
In 2019, Barnekreftforeningen asked Frontkom to help streamline its administrative work so that as much of the organisation's resources as possible could go to members and research. The assignment also involved enabling Barnekreftforeningen to run effective relationship journeys for its target groups, and to ensure those groups experience close and reassuring communication with the organisation.
"We want to work data-driven rather than date-driven. Our communication with contacts should be tailored to their activity and where they are in the relationship journey at any given time," says Sødal.
Frontkom's work for Barnekreftforeningen included data collection, insight and analysis to define the organisation's objectives, target groups and desired relationship journeys. An extensive pre-project in 2019 resulted in a clear recommendation and action plan from Frontkom that shifts focus away from systems and on to people. Based on this mapping and these recommendations, a digital strategy for 2019–2022 was then developed.
We collaborate with Frontkom on both technology and content, but we also appreciate their commitment to causes that matter to us. One example is Football Shirt Friday, one of our campaigns to raise awareness of childhood cancer.

Tailored CRM for complex needs
Barnekreftforeningen needs a tailored CRM to handle the complexity required for the organisation to fulfil its social mission. At a non-profit like Barnekreftforeningen, the needs are more multifaceted than at commercial companies. Here we are not talking about customers in the traditional sense, but a combination of members, volunteers, private donors and corporate donors. The Drupal-based CiviCRM enables a bespoke CRM that supports the various relationship journeys essential to Barnekreftforeningen's work.

Working data-driven
The organisation must maintain a commercial focus to secure funding for its own operations, but profit cannot guide its communications. Good, tailored relationship journeys are therefore crucial for meeting the needs and expectations of the various target groups. Administrative Director Sødal chooses to move away from the term 'customer journey' and replace it with 'relationship journey'. It is important to Barnekreftforeningen that the data held in CiviCRM is not owned by an external supplier, and Sødal values the way the system enables data-driven working.
Barnekreftforeningen's tailored CRM, developed in collaboration with Frontkom, ensures that tasks which previously required manual effort and precious staff time are now automated. Key examples include automatic follow-up of existing and potential donors at various stages of the giving journey, and automatic invoicing of membership fees.
Having both the website and the CRM Drupal-based raises efficiency and makes us more professional. The result is a total transformation of how we present ourselves.
CMS that reduces operational costs
After extensive analysis and thorough design work, Barnekreftforeningen and Frontkom jointly developed a new website in Drupal, launched in September 2019. The site's architecture puts people at the centre and establishes effective relationship journeys. The overarching goal is to meet all target groups' information needs, follow up the various forms of giving journeys, and drive conversions.
To relieve staff and reduce operational costs, it is important that Barnekreftforeningen's CMS allows its 13 regional associations to handle part of the administrative work. In late 2021, the organisation put in place a shared national event registration system. In 2022 the solution handled a total of 6,778 participants across 174 events.
The Drupal Gutenberg page builder has a low barrier to entry, so all staff can publish. Ownership no longer sits with technologists but with content producers. That creates both proximity and efficiency.

Good payment solutions drive conversions
The vision that no child should die from cancer takes precedence over short-term fundraising. Yet Barnekreftforeningen depends on income from membership fees, donations, regular private donors and corporate donors in order to carry out its social mission.
Frontkom has developed a Vipps module for recurring payments on Drupal, used by organisations including Barnekreftforeningen and Unicef. Support for Barnekreftforeningen's work is now possible via card payment, invoice, direct debit and Vipps. In 2022 the website handled a total of 6,494 transactions, amounting to a combined sum of NOK 5.3 million.

Open source is right for a non-profit organisation
Barnekreftforeningen's CRM and CMS are now both Drupal-based. Sødal emphasises the importance of the system not placing constraints on solutions, but being further developed as the organisation's needs change. The choice of open-source technology is by no means accidental.
"We invest resources in building good solutions for our organisation, and the effort we put in can benefit others with similar needs," he says with enthusiasm. "That way our work can help support other good causes instead of a commercial actor profiting from it."

PR and content production
The collaboration between Barnekreftforeningen and Frontkom continues to develop. Starting in winter 2023, Frontkom Experience contributed PR work to increase attention and revenue for Barnekreftforeningen's activities. Through close cooperation with the organisation's marketing and communications department, Frontkom also assisted with content production for Barnekreftforeningen's print and digital publications.
