Can an AI agent actually do my job?
PA gets this question in almost every client meeting now. His answer is almost always the same: it depends on the job, and how much of it consists of doing something versus judging something.
An AI agent isn't a chatbot. It's a system that can take several steps on its own: read an email, look up information in another system, fill out a form, and alert a person when something needs a human eye. The difference from regular automation is that the agent can reason its way through tasks it wasn't programmed step by step to solve.
The hype versus what's actually happening
A lot of what gets sold as «autonomous agents» today is still far from taking over an entire role. What they're very good at, though, is removing the boring, repetitive parts of a role, so people can spend their time on what actually requires judgment, creativity, or relationships.
PA never hesitates to say it plainly: an agent that isn't given clear boundaries gets dangerous fast. It can loop, make wrong decisions with a lot of confidence, or act on outdated information without knowing it itself.
Where agents actually make a difference today
Customer service is the clearest example: an agent that reads incoming requests, categorizes them, pulls up relevant history, and answers the simple questions itself, while escalating the rest with full context already in place.
Another area is internal research and document work: combining data from several sources, drafting first versions of reports, or monitoring whether something has changed in a system and alerting the right person.
What both have in common: a human still sets the boundaries and makes the final call when something is ambiguous. The agent does the groundwork.
How to get started without getting burned
Start with one narrow task that's already well-described and predictable, not with the whole department at once. Measure the effect. Expand once you actually know what the agent is good at in your context, not based on what a vendor promised in a demo.
The question isn't whether AI agents can do your job. The question is which part of the job you'd most like to hand off.
PA helps businesses find exactly that part, and build an agent that actually does something with it.
